Savage Beauty
More than a year after his passing, my heart is now heavy with grief as I have finally understood the artistic genius that the world lost when Alexander McQueen took his own life. I visited his “Savage Beauty” exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art here in New York City today and am beyond amazed. I am beyond inspired and astonished by what I have experienced, and yes, it was an experience.
I have always heard McQueen’s name and seen the towering shoes that celebrities have worn on red carpets and in videos as their “right of passage” into society’s idea of what “couture” is. Beyond that, I did not know much about his work (or even him).
Today, however, I have fallen in love with Alexander McQueen. The “Savage Beauty” exhibit does not simply feature his garments on display, but rather an intimate fairy tale twisted into stories relating to his mentality in specific life situations. He manages to comment on society, culture or events with his brilliant designs, all interlaced throughout equally stunning set design and perfectly matched audio tracks to compliment the mood of the specific collection in each room. As an artist, a designer, and a visionary, his work evokes such a strong emotion in me that I am overwhelmed and delighted all at once. After seeing his exhibit today, I feel somehow connected and aware of his intent, his reason, his passion. That, to me, is what art is about. Being able to allow your WORK to communicate those traits without even needing to be present (as the artist) to explain it.
I vow to learn more about this man. I vow to learn about why he was the way he was, how he was able to allow his designs resonate with his emotions and passion so deeply and how he was able to share his passion with the world in a way that few understood but many could appreciate.
I started my design library today by purchasing the 250 page book about Alexander McQueens’ “Savage Beauty” collection, which not only features loads of his quotes, but details about the garments and their inspiration, side by side with large images. Inspiration in full effect. I am still in a state of visual and mental bliss, simply in awe. Rest in peace and thank you for sharing your brilliance, McQueen.
