"The Dynamic Ego" by Joaquin Hernandez

I conceptualized this 3 panel composition for my recent Fundamentals of Design class displaying elements of repetition and concentration to represent the different levels of an “ego”.  In the more concentrated (upper left) corner, I used darker shades (tones) to highlight the “dark side” of having “too much” of an ego.  Things can get very concentrated and self absorbed, blurry and aggressive when your ego is so focused.  As the ego becomes lighter in color (tone) and less concentrated, it leads towards the positive aspects of having an ego; eventually the ego stands alone, almost peacefully (bottom right corner) showing control, stability, power and individuality.

To create this piece, I made three different sized origami inspired templates of the word “ego” from paper and packing tape, and used markers in different tones on bristol board.  When the composition was complete, I cut the piece into 3 equal sized panels.  Thank you for the opportunity to express myself.  I hope you enjoyed it!  Special thanks to my amazing teacher (and an amazing artist) Mariah Fee.
